SUMMARY:Virtual: FREE-Family Astronomy Night – VIRTUAL EVENT @ MSU St. Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Jupiter:  King of the Planets\nHave you noticed that Jupiter is currently in a great spot for convenient viewing\, high in the south shortly after dark?  Have you heard that Jupiter is by far the largest planet in our solar system—so much so that it has affected other bodies in our system\, and continues to do so today?  Are you aware that\, while Earth has sent nearly 40 orbiter/lander missions to Mars\, Jupiter has received only two?  Or that there is a spacecraft currently orbiting Jupiter right now?  Do you know why studying Jupiter is fundamentally different than studying Mars or any of the nearer planets?  Join us by Zoom to learn more! \nYou may register now to  receive the Zoom login. You may register up to the presentation start time or even during the meeting to join us. \nhttps://msu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_w_lLX8FvT5ylUpSBAg_lIw \nTime allowed for live Q & A throughout the event. ASL Interpretation featured during the event. \n\nJoin us virtually for a presentation focused on the planet Jupiter.  We will describe how studies of Jupiter have changed over the years\, from visual and telescopic observations through photography\, spacecraft\, and modern imaging methods that have fundamentally changed our views of Jupiter (and everything else!).  We will also summarize the key learnings about Jupiter discovered in each era.  How does Jupiter appear to us in the sky?  How far away is it?  What is it made of?  Does it have moons or rings?  If so\, how many?  What about the great red spot?  Are there any other surface features?  Is the surface different from the interior?  We will answer all of these questions\, and more.  Just as important\, we will also describe how astronomers (and robotic spacecraft) have discovered these things\, telling the story of how our understanding of Jupiter came about. \nAnd\, as always\, we’ll talk about what’s happening in the sky this month.  Have you seen brilliant Venus returning to the evening sky\, joining not just Jupiter\, but Saturn and Mars as well?  Did you know that Mercury will be making its best morning appearance of the year?  Are you able to find Orion\, and do you know how to use it to locate half a dozen other constellations?  Are you ready for the Winter Hexagon in all its glory?  We will help you see all of these things yourself. \n\nImage credit: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2020/hubble-captures-crisp-new-portrait-of-jupiters-storms \n\nPlease join our mailing list to receive notices about upcoming Astronomy Night presentations and other events at St. Andrews! \nMichigan State University is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs\, services\, and activities. Accommodation for persons with disabilities may be requested by contacting 989 374-9903 or lightcla@msu.edu. \n\n\nProgramming is made possible through the support of several local organizations: the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation\, the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation\, the Charles J. Strosacker Foundation\, and the Dow Chemical Company Foundation. \n1/11/23 \n7:00pm-8:30pm \n

SUMMARY:Online: Family Astronomy Night - "Hubble Space Telescope" with MSU St. Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Throughout all of science \, surely no single piece of equipment is more famous than the Hubble Space Telescope. It has produced more beautiful and amazing images than any other telescope. But do you know what makes the HST so special? Why do we need a telescope in space anyway? What can Hubble do better than other telescopes\, and why? Most importantly\, what has it shown us\, and what have we learned from it? \nAdults and families with school-age and older children are invited to join us virtually at MSU-Midland for a presentation focused on the Hubble Space Telescope. We will begin with a quick history of Hubble\, including the infamous “blurry vision” it had at first. We will describe the telescope itself\, and will detail the purpose and capabilities of the many instruments it has on board. Mostly\, we will highlight many of the numerous amazing images that the Hubble has produced\, describing what made each of them so important. \nPlus\, we will talk about what’s up in the November sky. Have you seen brilliant Venus totally dominating the evening sky\, along with Jupiter which remains visible throughout the night until dawn? Saturn is also plainly visible\, with Mercury and Uranus being a bit harder to see. Now that it’s well into fall\, the Great Square of Pegasus has risen high in the east\, yet the Summer Triangle is still high in the sky. Do you know how to locate these landmarks\, and—more importantly—how to use them to find a dozen other constellations? Are you ready for November’s Leonid Meteor Showers? We will show you how to find all these things (and more) for yourself. \nRegister now to receive the Zoom login. You may register at anytime including after the start of the presentation. \nRegister: FAMILY ASTRONOMY NIGHT \nPresentation (virtual only) on November 8\, 7:00 PM.
