SUMMARY:Online: Family Astronomy Night - "Hubble Space Telescope" with MSU St. Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Throughout all of science \, surely no single piece of equipment is more famous than the Hubble Space Telescope. It has produced more beautiful and amazing images than any other telescope. But do you know what makes the HST so special? Why do we need a telescope in space anyway? What can Hubble do better than other telescopes\, and why? Most importantly\, what has it shown us\, and what have we learned from it? \nAdults and families with school-age and older children are invited to join us virtually at MSU-Midland for a presentation focused on the Hubble Space Telescope. We will begin with a quick history of Hubble\, including the infamous “blurry vision” it had at first. We will describe the telescope itself\, and will detail the purpose and capabilities of the many instruments it has on board. Mostly\, we will highlight many of the numerous amazing images that the Hubble has produced\, describing what made each of them so important. \nPlus\, we will talk about what’s up in the November sky. Have you seen brilliant Venus totally dominating the evening sky\, along with Jupiter which remains visible throughout the night until dawn? Saturn is also plainly visible\, with Mercury and Uranus being a bit harder to see. Now that it’s well into fall\, the Great Square of Pegasus has risen high in the east\, yet the Summer Triangle is still high in the sky. Do you know how to locate these landmarks\, and—more importantly—how to use them to find a dozen other constellations? Are you ready for November’s Leonid Meteor Showers? We will show you how to find all these things (and more) for yourself. \nRegister now to receive the Zoom login. You may register at anytime including after the start of the presentation. \nRegister: FAMILY ASTRONOMY NIGHT \nPresentation (virtual only) on November 8\, 7:00 PM.
