DYI: Candle Making for Emergencies

Burrr!! It sure has been a cold start to our 2013-2014 winter. The snowfall has been heavier than normal for our area, and many of the schools in the Great Lakes Bay Region have had multiple snow/ice days. WNEM reports that our area has had approx. 13 inches above the average snowfall. Our lovely Michigan weather will give us a few warm and sunny days, but one thing is certain, there are more cold days, snow storms, and dig-outs on the horizon.

In an effort to find fun indoor activities for kids to do during the winter, we stumbled upon these great emergency candles. In an attempt to avoid frustration the next time the power goes out, these easy to make candles will act as a great source of light throughout the year.

In the case of an emergency, and loss of power, candles are a necessity. Store bought emergency candles can be very pricy. These candles are inexpensive and easy make. They can be nicely stored in the packaging the pint glasses came in and burn for a very long time.

The great part is that with this candle, there is no melting of materials, so there is no worry of burning. Although they will still be a bit messy, the heat factor in assembly is not an issue and makes this a great activity for ages 4+ up. Younger children can help decorate the outside of the jars.

Things you need:

  • Shortening
  • Pint size glass jars with tops
  • Taper candle (4-5 inches depending on jar shape/size)
  • Jar funnel
  • Scents like peppermint, eucalyptus, or your other favorite essential oils.

The Back to Basics Gal from South East Michigan is going to help us learn how to make these awesome emergency candles.  Here are her helpful instructions:

The Back to Basics Gal states that “If the power goes out, nothing is more frustrating than not having a light source to find your way around the dark with.” We at Great lakes Bay Moms agree! Pick up these materials the next time you are at the grocery store, and have them on hand for an indoor activity when the skies are grey.

Other suggestions: These candles can be used to for gifts to family and friends. Add some food coloring for a lovely gift. These are perfect for teachers, church leaders, grandparents, caretakers, and any Michigander. They are also great to have on hand for budget friendly, handmade birthday gifts throughout the year
