*Juneteenth, short for ‘June Nineteenth’ marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people are freed. They came a full two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law on January 1, 1863.
On June 17, 2021 Juneteenth became a federal holiday and honors the end of slavery in the United States.
