Activities:

Since this week is all about BUGS, here are a bunch of easy and fun bug activities to do with your favorite little buggies!

Make A Ladybug

What You Need:

  • Black construction paper
  • Red washable paint
  • Black pipe cleaner
  • Black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A pair of wiggly fingers!

Directions:

  1. Have your child paint the underside of the paper plate
  2. While your child is painting, cut out a head, some spots, and a thin rectangle with the black construction paper
  3. Glue on head and spots
  4. Poke two small holes in the head and thread the pipe cleaner through

Fly Swatter Painting

This is a fun activity to do outside on a beautiful spring day.  You can do this project two ways – either use a large piece of construction paper, or buy a roll of craft paper and make gift wrap out of your kid’s fly swatter painting.

What You Need:

  • Craft paper (mailing sections of stores carry it) or use the opposite side of wrapping paper
  • A dish for paint
  • Paint
  • Fun fly swatter
  • You may also need some rocks to hold down the paper if it’s windy!

Directions:

  1. Either prepare your paper, or cut a large piece of paper off the roll
  2. Pour the paint into a dish
  3. Dip your swatter in
  4. SWAT ! (It can splatter so wear yucky clothes)
  5. Add a new color
  6. SWAT!
  7. Let dry
  8. Display for all to see, or use it to wrap a gift

The Ants go Marching

What You Need:

  • 4 sections of egg carton
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes

Directions:

  1. Cut out three sections of egg carton
  2. Have your kiddo paint the larger piece of egg carton
  3. Cut two holes in the top of one section of the ant (head) and thread half of one pipe cleaner (snip them all in two) to make antennas.
  4. Paint the egg carton
  5. Let dry
  6. Glue on some googly eyes

Symmetrical Bugs

This activity can be so much more than just creating bugs!  While making these bugs, talk to your little one about symmetry and color mixing.

What You Need:

  • Paint or paint dabbers
  • Brushes
  • Folded white construction paper
  • Markers/crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Lay out some newspaper and paint (I pre-folded a bunch of papers so they would be ready to go)
  2. Use a paintbrush or dabber and place the paint on one side of the fold or directly on the fold
  3. Make sure the paint stays wet
  4. Paint in a few sections to create 3 small creations or paint right down the center for one large creation
  5. Fold paper, press down, and smooth the palm of your hand over the paper to transfer the image to both sides of the paper
  6. Open the paper and see what you’ve created
