Bustin’ the January Blues

by: Lori Bergevin

Congratulations!

You’ve made it through the hustle & bustle of November/December’s celebrations & family gatherings. Give yourself a pat on the back. By now, your kiddos are back to school and we’re all trying to settle back into a routine.

After all the craziness of the past few weeks, does anyone find it hard to refocus & find balance, peace? Maybe it is just me. For years, I think I suffered from a bit of depression in the month of January. It’s a welcomed treat to catch up and spend time with family and friends but then we go back to our realities of day to day life & it can be a bit of a let down. The decorations come down & the house looks so bare… almost sad. It can hit like a ton of bricks. I think I’ve found a way to break out of this “sad” cycle. Through the month of January, starting the second week, I am going to read and journal, everyday. I am going to remove my Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest apps (GASP!) from my phone & hide the bookmarks on my computer. This way I will have “found” the time I need for ME! Taking a social media hiatus can be a challenge, but it’s not forever.

I have done this before and it really helps me refocus. Who doesn’t have a stack, or list, of books they wish they had time to read? If you don’t, ask around. With that being said, you won’t have to use this ME time for reading/journaling. Not everyone enjoys reading. Maybe you’d like to go back to an old hobby. Knitting? Crocheting? Sketching? Writing? Something you can easily set down, at a moments notice, and pick up right where you left off.

Journaling is important because it helps you reflect on the year that passed and focus on goals for the next year. It’s always entertaining to have it to go back to and look at, as well. So in 2015, you can go back to 2014 and count your blessings.

This is my plan for January, 2014. Who’s in? Who wants to join me??
