March is Reading Month: Delta College Public Media’s Family Reading & Writing Challenge

Delta College Public Media’s Family Reading & Writing Challenge

Delta College Public Media and The Michigan Learning Channel (MLC) are here to help you make reading and writing fun.

Reading Tips:

  • Read together as a family.
  • Discover a wide range of reading materials. Examples: Books, Magazines, Recipes, Signs, Newspapers, etc.
  • Find a daily time to read as a family or independently.
  • Create a fun reading spot, create a reading fort or reading nook.
  • Host a story time and invite a special guest.

Reading Challenge:

Throughout the month of March we are encouraging families or individuals to find fun ways to read for at least 10 hours. Track your own hours here. Once you have tracked your 10 hours, contact [email protected] to be entered into our raffle.

Writing Tips:

  • Find fun ways to practice writing. Examples: writing family recipes, family traditions, create books, share notes, and encourage play with menus or scripts.
  • Make writing into a game or use it in a craft.
  • Write about what you know and what you don’t know.
  • When writing a story hook your readers, start your opening sentence or paragraph with something that makes your audience, laugh, or that they would find exciting or interesting.
  • Show rather than tell. Adding too much description, or too many adjectives or adverbs can slow up your reader and make them lose interest.

Writing Challenge:

Families wanting to participate in our writing challenge can write or draw about our challenge topic “If I could create my own PBS show.” Each family can write as a family or individual. Send your essay, ideas, or drawings to [email protected] to be entered into our challenge raffle.

We are encouraging all families to join in the challenge. Participate in either reading, writing, or both challenges. Delta college will accept pictures, reading hours, tracking sheets or videos on how you made reading fun in your home. All submission sent in will enter you into a raffle for a Google home, Google Chromecast and PBS prize pack. Winners will be contacted the first week of April.
